All Calvary's video courses are taught by Calvary's own faculty, and the classes are identical in content to the courses taught on campus. A short biography for each professor is listed below above each of the courses they teach. A more extensive biography for each professor can be found on the faculty home page. George CoonThe following courses are taught by Mr. George Coon, who holds an M.Div. and Th.M. from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Toronto's School of Theology. Mr. Coon was a pastor for five years. CH501 Church History II. This class will provide an introductory survey of the events, writings, and individuals of Western Church history from the Reformation to the present day. 2 credit hours. TH501 Prolegomena and Bibliology. A survey of prolegomena, dealing with the nature, method and sources of theology; and bibliology, dealing with the doctrines of revelation, inspiration, illumination, and theological hermeneutics. Special emphasis will be placed on the contemporary debate over the inerrancy of Scripture. 2 credit hours. TH502 Trinitarianism. A study of the existence, nature and works of God including study of divine attributes, the tri-personality of one Godhead, and ex nihilo creation. Special attention will be given to Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. 2 credit hours. Doug FinkbeinerThe following course is taught by Dr. Doug Finkbeiner, who holds an M.Div. and Th.M. from Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary, a D.Min. from Denver Seminary. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Early Judaism from the University of Pennsylvania. He pastored for 13 years and joined the seminary faculty in 1997. NT510 New Testament Backgrounds. Chronology, social and political influences, and other background information necessary for a complete and proper understanding of New Testament revelation. 2 credit hours. Mark FarnhamThe following courses are taught by Mr. Mark Farnham, who holds an M.Div. from Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary and a Th.M. from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He pastored for seven years and has been a seminary professor since 2002. CH505 Ecclesiology. A study concerned with the definition, purpose, organization, ministry, government, relation, and ordinances of the church. 2 credit hours. NT615 Pastoral Epistles. A study of 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus. The background, thought development and chronological placement of each book is studies. Emphasis is placed on instruction regarding pastoral leadership, church planting, organization and administration of the local church. Contemporary church issues will be treated to provide a biblical basis for a philosophy of pastoral ministry. 2 credit hours. Sam HarbinThe following courses are taught by Calvary's president, Dr. Samuel Harbin, who holds an M.Div. from Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary and a D.Min. from Dallas Theological Seminary. He also holds a Certification with the National Association of Nouthetic Counselors (Faith Baptist Counseling Center). He was a senior pastor for four years. He has been a seminary professor since 1995. PC501 Counseling Principles. A study of the philosophy of biblical counseling with an emphasis on the principles and components of biblical counseling, the relation of counseling to the local church, the dangers of non-Christian and eclectic Christian counseling, confidentiality in counseling, and the place of the person, norm (Scriptures) and problems in biblical counseling. 2 credit hours. PC601 Counseling Problems. A study of the more frequent counseling problems faced by pastoral counselors. Among the topics considered are anger, worry, fear, guilt, depression, marital conflict, parent-child conflict, crisis intervention, grief, and addictive behaviors. 2 credit hours. Steve HorineThe following courses are taught by Dr. Steve Horine, who holds an M.Div. from Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary and a Th.M. and Ph.D. from Westminster Theological Seminary. He has been a seminary professor since 1992. OT510 Old Testament Backgrounds. An introduction to and study of the linguistic, literary, and cultural background of the Old Testament particularly as it affected Israel. Areas of interest include the history of God's chosen nation, Old Testament chronology, neighboring Ancient Near East societies and cultures that came in contact with an influenced Israel, Old Testament social and religious institutions such as temple, priesthood, sacrifices, etc. Biblical archaeological and historical records are utilized. 2 credit hours. OT649 Exile and Restoration. The history of Israel from the time of Josiah through the ministry of Nehemiah. Study covers the books of I Kings through Esther. 2 credit hours. Tim JordanThe following courses are taught by Dr. Timothy Jordan, Chancellor of Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary, and Senior Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church of Lansdale, PA. He holds an M.Div. from Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary and a D.Min. from Westminster Theological Seminary. PT504 Baptist Polity. Principles and practices of a Baptist church are treated. Church membership, officers, government, discipline, ordinances, and other related matters are covered. 2 credit hours. PT530 Biblical Philosophy of Ministry. The Biblical concept of the pastoral office; pastoral duties and the pastor's relationship to the total church program. 2 credit hours. Gordon LovikThe following courses are taught by Dr. Gordon Lovik, who holds an M.Div. and a Th.M. from Central Baptist Theological Seminary and a Th.D. from Grace Theological Seminary. He has been a seminary professor since 1963. NT520 New Testament Introduction. Critical problems of canon and text of the New Testament. The composition, authorship, date, and design of each book are considered. The student also receives a complete and proper understanding of New Testament revelation. 2 credit hours. NT527 Revelation. An exposition of the futuristic interpretation, premillennial and pretribulational. Other schools of thought concerning the second coming of our Lord are treated. 2 credit hours. NT600 New Testament Parables. A survey of the hermeneutics of parabolic literature with an emphasis upon the parables found in Matthew and Luke. 2 credit hours. Charles McLainThe following courses are taught by Dr. Charles McLain, who holds an M.A. from Dropsie and an M.Div. and Th.M. from Central Baptist Theological Seminary. He also holds a Ph.D. from Westminster Theological Seminary. He has been a seminary professor since 1983. He was a senior pastor for four years. OT520 Old Testament Introduction. An introductory study of the Old Testament text including textual criticism, canonization, methodologies, themes. Special attention will be directed to a study of the history and technique of Critical Methods as well as an understanding of unifying themes and characteristic distinctions between Pentateuch, Writings, and Prophets. 2 credit hours. OT526 Daniel. An analytical and expository study of the book with a focus on the prophetic-apocalyptic sections. This study provides and introduction and foundation for 'prophetic' studies which are continued in Revelation and Eschatology. Prerequisite: TH500. 2 credit hours. TH500 Hermeneutics. A theoretical and practical examination of the proper use of language as it is designed to convey Scripture. Stress is placed on interpretation by a literal/normal/plain hermeneutic. 2 credit hours. Jeff TuttleThe following course is taught by Dr. Jeffrey Tuttle, who holds an M.Div. from Central Baptist Theological Seminary, a Th.M. from Grace Theological Seminary, and an Ed.D. from Bob Jones University. He has pastoral experience and has also served as a seminary professor and as a missionary in Germany. In 2003, he became the Dean of Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary. PT510 Sermon Preparation/Communication. Introduction to basic communication theory and skills with emphasis on the methods of constructing sermons. Special emphasis will be given to the proposition and parallel supporting points of a sermon. Also studied, the dynamics of effective Bible teaching. 2 credit hours. Warren VanhetlooThe following courses are taught by Dr. Warren Vanhetloo, who holds a Th. D. from Dallas Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He served as a seminary professor for over 40 years. TH503 Angelology and Anthropology. A study of angelology, the doctrines of the unfallen angels, the fallen angels, and Satan; and anthropology, a study of the origin, nature and original state of man; the fall; doctrine of sin and free agency. 2 credit hours. TH605 Apologetics. An examination of the unity and logical foundation of the Christian faith; systematic defense of the Christian system. 2 credit hours. Tim Jordan, Charles McLain, and Sue McLainThe following course is taught by Dr. Timothy Jordan and Dr. & Mrs. Charles McLain. (Please see previous entries for information regarding these instructors.) PC621 Ministering to Victims of Abuse. This course is designed (1) to assist the Christian worker in understanding and recognizing the causes and characteristics of abuse; and (2) to formulate a biblical approach that will deal with the personal and relationship-shattering effects of abuse and that will deliver people from the bondage of their victimization and sin. 2 credit hours. |
